Why does the Gestalt approach work?
One of the most important principles of the Gestalt approach is that it treats the person not as a set of separate problems, but as a unified, living system. The emphasis is not on a detailed analysis of the past or on the question of “why it happened”, but on what is happening now and how this experience is present in our lives.
This approach is effective because it helps us return to the present moment, where the possibility of real change is born. When someone sees their own feelings, thoughts and reactions more clearly, they can more easily recognize the patterns that have been preventing them from moving forward.
The goal of Gestalt coaching is not to provide ready-made answers, but to help the client discover their own solutions and resources in a supported situation.
How is it different from other approaches?
The Gestalt approach differs from traditional, problem-focused approaches in several ways:
1. Present focus
It does not primarily rely on the analysis of the past, but focuses on experiences lived in the present.
2. Experiential learning
We don’t just talk about the problem, but we make you aware of how it manifests itself in the here and now situation – in feelings, body sensations, thoughts.
3. Responsibility and awareness
The emphasis is on the client recognizing their own role in their situation and being an active part of the change.
4. Relational presence
The coach does not “solve” as an outside expert, but supports self-discovery with their presence, attention and questions.
5. Organic change
Change is not a forced process, but develops naturally, with an increase in awareness.
How does this help in practice?
During Gestalt coaching, we often work with questions that help you get closer to your own experiences:
How do you feel in this situation now?
How does this manifest itself in your body or thoughts?
What do you really want in this situation?
What is stopping you from taking action?
These questions not only lead to reflection, but also to inner realizations that can trigger real changes.
Summary
The essence of the Gestalt methodology is that it helps us reconnect with ourselves, become more aware, and thus make decisions that are truly in line with our inner needs and goals.
It does not provide ready-made solutions - but supports you in finding your own.
